Fallen Angel: The Passion of Fausto Coppi

Reviewed on 03 November 2010 by Bike-Books.com

This is one for hardcore cycling fans. I don’t think you go into reading something like this without already being a bike fan.

Fallen Angel: The Passion of Fausto Coppi is an excellent, short read, takes a broad focus, looking at the life and biking exploits of the great Fausto Coppi. It treats both in equal measure and whilst I personally would have loved more detailed descriptions of the races and equipment, I think those would have been outside the scope of what Fotheringham set out to document.

As one of the rare English language biographical accounts of Coppi’s life that I know of, this is a great read. Fotheringham does an excellent job of describing a legendary character in a level-headed way, never falling in love with his subject, but certainly treating him with deference and, when appropriate, pity.

Coppi’s is an amazing, yet tragic story.
